The elevated new menu stays true to the classic and much-loved Light Years style of share plates
tailored to group dining. Highlight dishes on the menu included: a prawn toast donut served with a yuzu koshu dipping sauce; salt and pepper tofu seasoned with Szechuan pepper umami salt (vegan); hot and tingly BBQ lamb ribs; and honey king prawns with typhoon shelter crumbs (referring to a topping used by Hongkongese fishermen to serve with crab while taking shelter from typhoons).
The new Light Years also features an expanded beverage menu that reflects their original use of tropical flavours that both complement and enhance the dishes. Old favourite ‘Netflix and Chill’ with popcorn infused rum, passionfruit and lemon will return, while new drinks include the Kiwi Matcha Margi with tequila, kiwi puree, matcha syrup, and lime, and a Szechuan Sour with Szechuan shiso infused gin (subtly flavoured yet strong enough for drinkers to experience its mouth numbing quality), Aperol, Vermouth, and orange. Our favourite is the ‘Wasabi Boy’ (Lula White Rum, apple liqueur, fresh apple and wasabi) served in a coupe with a large wasabi leaf for garnish.
With custom designs by Sarah Ellison and Studio Plenty, the new space is three times the size of the Lawson Street OG. There’s even a 10-seat private dining room which is perfect for celebrating special occasions! While they’ve retained the energetic holiday vibe, the interiors boast a departure from the Light Year’s signature tropical style in favour of a more refined, tonal palette emulating the maturation of the brand.
Bookings in advance come highly recommended, however, the venue does leave some tables aside for walks-ins daily. Just make sure you head in early as those tend to get snapped up quickly too!
